The Book of Matthew 13 v- 51 thru 53

51“Do you understand all these things?” They answered, “Yes.”52 And Jesus replied, “Then every scribe who has been instructed in the kingdom of heaven is like the head of a household who brings from his storeroom both the new and the old.” 53 When Jesus finished these parables, He went away from there.

In these verses, Jesus is ensuring that His disciples grasp the meaning of the parables He has just shared. The parables covered in Matthew 13 include the Parable of the Sower, the Parable of the Weeds, the Parable of the Mustard Seed, and others. These stories are rich with spiritual and moral lessons about the Kingdom of Heaven.

When Jesus asks, "Have you understood all these things?" and the disciples respond affirmatively, it indicates that they have grasped the essential teachings. Understanding is crucial because it enables the disciples to teach others effectively.

Verse 52 introduces a metaphor. Jesus likens a teacher of the law who becomes a disciple in the kingdom to a house owner who brings out new and old treasures. This metaphor suggests that those who are knowledgeable in the Scriptures (the "old" treasures) and who also understand Jesus' teachings (the "new" treasures) are well-equipped to instruct others. They can draw upon the rich traditions of the Jewish faith while also integrating the new revelations brought by Jesus.

Verse 53 signifies a transition: "When Jesus had finished these parables, he moved on from there." This indicates the end of this particular teaching session and the beginning of a new phase in Jesus' ministry. It serves as a narrative marker, showing that Jesus' work is ongoing and dynamic. These verses highlight the importance of understanding and integrating both old and new teachings for effective discipleship and teaching, and they mark a transition in Jesus’ ministry.

The Eucharist, or Holy Communion, can be regarded as one of these "new treasures" that Jesus brought forth. To contrast it with the "old treasures" mentioned in Matthew 13:52, let's delve into both aspects:

### Old Treasures

1. Old Covenant Practices: The "old treasures" primarily refer to the rituals, laws, and traditions of the Jewish faith under the Old Covenant. This includes practices such as animal sacrifices, observance of the Sabbath, and the celebration of Passover.

2. Passover: One of the most significant old treasures is the Passover meal, which commemorates the Israelites' deliverance from slavery in Egypt. The Passover lamb's blood was a symbol of salvation and protection.

### New Treasures

1. The Eucharist (Holy Communion): The Eucharist is one of the central "new treasures" introduced by Jesus. During the Last Supper, Jesus took bread and wine and identified them as His body and blood, establishing a new covenant. This act transformed the traditional Passover meal into a new form of worship and remembrance of His sacrifice.

2. New Covenant: The Eucharist symbolizes the New Covenant, which is based on Jesus' sacrifice on the cross for the forgiveness of sins. Unlike the repeated animal sacrifices of the Old Covenant, Jesus' sacrifice is once and for all. Amen.

Join me as we pray our daily prayer of forgiveness. The Lord’s Prayer.

At the Savior's command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to say:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil, graciously grant peace in our days, that, by the help of your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

I am sorry Lord. I believe You died and rose for me. Please forgive me as I forgive others. I share You as my Lord and Savior seeking to live your Will in all things. Prayers for wife Toni and my mother Betty pray for our children especially our two oldest Alexandra & Allen Son in Law Mark Stern; Julian, Gabriel and Jeffrey and our grandchildren Oliver, Julian and Elliott. We pray for those we’ve said we’d pray for and those who’ve asked us to pray for them. We pray for the dying as we do each day Lord give them peace in their last breath. We pray for Holy Mother Church. Our prayers for our niece Brittany. In Jesus Precious Blood by His Name we pray. Amen.

Ephesians 6:17-20

08-01-2024 Matthew 13 V-5153

**The Old and The New**

In fields of faith where wisdom sows,

A Master speaks, His wisdom flows.

"Do you understand?" He asks,

With parables, He breaks our masks.

"Yes," we nod, hearts open wide,

To glean the truths that He provides.

From ancient scrolls to words anew,

He weaves a tapestry of every hue.

"A scribe well-taught in Heaven's way,

Is like a house with treasures to fully display.

From storerooms deep, both old and bright,

He brings forth truths in day and the night."

The old, a lamp from days of yore,

The new, a key to Heaven's door.

Together, they illuminate,

The path to grace, where love that is exceedingly great.

When Jesus ceased His tales to tell,

He journeyed on, His purpose swell.

But in our hearts, His words remain,

A guiding light through joy and pain.

So let us be, like scribes of old,

With hearts and minds both brave and bold.

To cherish truths both old and new,

And walk the path that Love construes.

For in the blend of past and now,

We find the strength to humbly bow.

To live and teach with wisdom's grace,

And seek the Kingdom's sacred place. Amen.
