The Letter to the Romans Chapter 6 Verse 18 thru 23
18 Freed from sin, you have become slaves of righteousness. 19 I am speaking in human terms because of the weakness of your nature. For just as you presented the parts of your bodies as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness for lawlessness, so now present them as slaves to righteousness for sanctification.20 For when you were slaves of sin, you were free from righteousness. 21 But what profit did you get then from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death.22 But now that you have been freed from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit that you have leads to sanctification, and its end is eternal life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
In Romans 6:18-23, the Apostle Paul emphasizes a profound transition experienced by believers: from the bondage of sin to the liberating embrace of God. In these verses, Paul concisely articulates the contradiction of servitude—serving sin leads to death, while serving God results in eternal life. This passage serves as a powerful reminder of the choices we make and their consequences.
"Having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness" (Romans 6:18). Here, Paul presents an essential truth: freedom from sin is not mere liberation in a vacuum, but a transition to a new allegiance. Once enslaved to sin, individuals may find themselves caught in a cycle of shame and regret, serving desires that ultimately lead to destruction. Paul challenges us to reflect: “What profit did you gain from the things of which you are now ashamed?” This emotional question invites self-examination. Have we pursued fleeting pleasures only to find remorse in their aftermath? The things that once seemed appealing slowly reveal their true nature, exposing a reality that leaves us yearning for something deeper and more fulfilling.
As Christians, we are called to abandon the futile pursuit of sin. Instead of following our basest instincts, we are encouraged to devote ourselves wholly to God. This devotion, described as becoming "slaves of God," is not a picture of submission that leads to despair, but rather a joyful surrender to a loving Master. When we serve God, we find purpose, direction, and the promise of eternal life. In Him, we discover a new identity, one that transforms our past regrets into testimonies of grace.
The choice to serve God is accompanied by the assurance of eternal life—a destiny that far outweighs any temporary gratification that sin offers. As Paul states, "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 6:23). The contrast is striking: death versus life, shame versus purpose, regret versus redemption.
So, my dear readers, take a moment to reflect. What are the things that once captivated you, now leading to feelings of shame? Can you see how far those pursuits are from the life God desires for you? Let go of those burdens and embrace the freedom that comes from being a servant of God. For in Him lies not just victory over sin, but the promise of everlasting life. Amen.
Join me as we pray our daily prayer of forgiveness. The Lord’s Prayer.
At the Savior's command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to pray:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil, graciously grant peace in our days, that, by the help of your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever.
I am sorry Lord. I believe You died and rose for me. Please forgive me as I forgive others. I share You as my Lord and Savior seeking to live your Will in all things. **For The Wages of Sin is Death**
In shadows deep, where choices lay,
A heart once bound, now finds its way.
From sin's death cold grip, our spirits rise,
In grace we find our eternal prize.
As slaves to sin, we wore the chain,
But mercy’s hand has washed away the stain.
With every step, a new refrain,
In righteousness, we break sin’s reign.
The gift of life, eternal grace,
Transforms our hearts in love's embrace.
No longer lost in darkness' night,
We walk in faith, in truth, in light.
The wages earned through shadows' sway,
Are death’s grim promise, led astray.
Yet through His blood, redemption is found,
In Him, our freedom knows no bound.
So choose the path that life bestows,
In righteousness, our spirit grows.
For what we sow, in joy we reap,
Eternal life, our souls to keep. Amen.
