The Gospel of Matthew Chapter 19 Verse 16 thru 23
16 Now someone approached him and said, “Teacher, what good must I do to gain eternal life?” 17 He answered him, “Why do you ask me about the good? There is only One who is good. If you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.” 18 He asked him, “Which ones?” And Jesus replied, “ ‘You shall not kill; you shall not commit adultery; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness; 19 honor your father and your mother’; and ‘you shall love your neighbor as yourself.’” 20 The young man said to him, “All of these I have observed. What do I still lack?” 21 Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to [the] poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” 22 When the young man heard this statement, he went away sad, for he had many possessions. 23 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Amen, I say to you, it will be hard for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven.”
Matthew 19:16-23 powerfully illustrates the tension between worldly wealth and spiritual richness. In this passage, a young man approaches Jesus, asking what he must do to inherit eternal life. Jesus initially points him to the commandments, and the young man confidently asserts his adherence to them since childhood. However, Jesus, seeing his heart, challenges him to sell his possessions and give to the poor, revealing that true discipleship requires a radical commitment beyond mere rule-following.
The rich young man's sorrowful departure highlights the pervasive challenge of materialism. He clings to his wealth, which symbolizes security, status, and comfort, but in doing so, he misses the profound treasure of eternal life that Jesus offers. This moment serves as an emotional reminder that our attachment to worldly things can hinder us from experiencing the fullness of life in Christ.
Being "rich in the Lord" transcends earthly possessions. It signifies a life intertwined with faith, hope, and love. When we prioritize our relationship with Christ above all else, we discover a wealth that the world cannot provide—a treasure that lasts for eternity. In Christ, we find forgiveness, purpose, and the promise of everlasting life.
As we reflect on this passage, let us remember that accumulating material goods often leads to temporary satisfaction, while being rich in Christ brings lasting joy and peace that the world cannot offer. Our priorities should shift from seeking fulfillment in worldly possessions to investing in our spiritual growth and deepening our relationship with Jesus. Ultimately, being rich in Christ means living in the fullness of His grace and love, a wealth that leads us to eternal life. Amen.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil, graciously grant peace in our days, that, by the help of your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever.
I am sorry Lord. I believe You died and rose for me. Please forgive me as I forgive others. I share You as my Lord and Savior seeking to live your Will in all things. He Went Away Sad
In the land where teachings shine so bright,
A young man approached, seeking guiding light.
“Good Teacher,” he said, with a heart pure and clean,
“What must I do for eternal life to gleam?”
With a wise, knowing glance, the Rabbi replied,
“Why call me good? The One is your guide.
Keep the commandments, as the Law has shown,
Honor mother and father, let love be your throne.”
Imbued with sincerity, the youth spoke with pride,
“All these I've kept; in them I abide.”
Yet a challenge was posed, a deeper request,
“Lack one thing still, if you seek to be blessed.”
“Sell what you own, distribute the wealth,
Come follow me, true riches are felt.”
But the young man turned, his heart filled with strife,
For great were his riches, his treasures of life.
Jesus watched him depart, sorrowful gaze,
“Easier for a camel through a needle’s maze,
Than for the wealthy to find Heaven’s gate;
They cling to their treasures, and there lies their fate.”
The disciples stood stunned, their hearts filled with fear,
“If not them, then whom can salvation draw near?”
With a promise of hope, Jesus softly proclaimed,
“For God, all is possible; His love is unclaimed.”
This tale of the rich, a lesson profound,
That true wealth is found not where gold can be crowned.
In hearts full of love, in surrender and grace,
Lies the Kingdom of Heaven, our true resting place. Amen.
