The Gospel of Matthew Chapter 19 Verse 3 thru 12

3 Some Pharisees approached him, and tested him, saying, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any cause whatever?” 4 He said in reply, “Have you not read that from the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female’ 5 and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? 6 So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, no human being must separate.” 7 They said to him, “Then why did Moses command that the man give the woman a bill of divorce and dismiss [her]?” 8 He said to them, “Because of the hardness of your hearts Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. 9 I say to you, whoever divorces his wife (unless the marriage is unlawful) and marries another commits adultery.” 10 [His] disciples said to him, “If that is the case of a man with his wife, it is better not to marry.” 11 He answered, “Not all can accept [this] word, but only those to whom that is granted. 12 Some are incapable of marriage because they were born so; some, because they were made so by others; some, because they have renounced marriage for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Whoever can accept this ought to accept it.”

Matthew 19:3-12 is a passage that delves into the complex themes of marriage, divorce, and celibacy, revealing the teachings of Jesus on these important issues. The passage begins with Pharisees questioning Jesus about the legality of divorce, trying to test His understanding of the law. Jesus responds by referring back to the Genesis account of creation, emphasizing that marriage is a divine institution meant to unite a man and a woman as one flesh. He underscores the sanctity of marriage and the seriousness of breaking that bond.

In verse 9, Jesus states that divorce is permissible in cases of sexual immorality, but He expresses that God’s intention is for the marriage covenant to be lifelong. This teaching highlights the idea that divorce should not be taken lightly and that reconciliation should be sought where possible. The disciples' reaction to Jesus’ teachings reveals the cultural and social challenges surrounding marriage and divorce at the time. They express concern that if such stringent rules apply, it might be better not to marry at all.

In the latter part of the passage, Jesus introduces the concept of celibacy, suggesting that some may choose to remain single for the sake of God’s kingdom. This call to celibacy indicates that there is an alternative to marriage, one that allows for a focused devotion to spiritual matters.

Truly, this passage challenges readers to reflect on the nature of commitment in relationships, the gravity of marital vows, and the possibility of living a life dedicated to spiritual pursuits, either through marriage or celibacy. It emphasizes that one's relationship with God should be paramount, guiding all other relationships and decisions. Amen.

Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil, graciously grant peace in our days, that, by the help of your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever.

I am sorry Lord. I believe You died and rose for me. Please forgive me as I forgive others. I share You as my Lord and Savior seeking to live your Will in all things. Prayers for wife Toni and my mother Betty pray for our children especially our two oldest Alexandra & Allen Son in Law Mark Stern; Julian, Gabriel and Jeffrey and our grandchildren Oliver, Julian and Elliott. We pray for those we’ve said we’d pray for and those who’ve asked us to pray for them. We pray for the dying as we do each day Lord give them peace in their last breath. Not All Can Accept This Word

In the land where the questions arise, 

The Pharisees gather, their motives not wise, 

"Is it lawful," they ask, with a glint in their eyes, 

“To put away a wife for just any guise?"

But Christ with compassion, so gentle, so clear, 

Reveals God’s intention, His purpose held dear, 

Through the ages, a message divine, 

What God has united, let no man divide.

In the beginning, it’s written, it’s shown, 

A man leaves his parents, with his wife he’s grown, 

In love’s sacred bond, they shall become one, 

A miracle woven, where two lives are spun.

Yet hardness of hearts, in the days of old, 

Moses allowed what the Spirit foretold, 

But Jesus proclaimed with authority grand, 

“Divorce was permitted, but not God’s command.”

He speaks of the Kingdom, where truth is revealed, 

To those who can hear, the mysteries unsealed, 

A life lived in love, with a heart set apart, 

Is the calling of those who will enter His heart.

For some are made eunuchs, for reasons profound, 

For the sake of the Kingdom, they’re glory-bound, 

But to each who can bear this, let them understand, 

The beauty of calling of God’s sovereign hand.

In a world full of questions, where hearts often stray, 

Let love be our anchor, our guiding ray, 

For marriage is sacred, a journey to share, 

In faith we are stronger, united in prayer. Amen.
