The Gospel of Matthew Chapter 15 Verse 21 thru 28
21 Then Jesus went from that place and withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. 22 And behold, a Canaanite woman of that district came and called out, “Have pity on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is tormented by a demon.” 23 But he did not say a word in answer to her. His disciples came and asked him, “Send her away, for she keeps calling out after us.” 24 He said in reply, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” 25 But the woman came and did him homage, saying, “Lord, help me.” 26 He said in reply, “It is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs.” 27 She said, “Please, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table of their masters.” 28 Then Jesus said to her in reply, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.” And her daughter was healed from that hour.
Matthew 15:21-28 recounts an emotional encounter between Jesus and a Canaanite woman in the district of Tyre and Sidon. Jesus and His disciples were in this region, which was predominantly Gentile, perhaps seeking a place of respite away from the growing opposition in Jewish territories. This setting illustrates Jesus’ broader mission to reach beyond the boundaries of Israel.
In this passage, the Canaanite woman approaches Jesus, pleading for healing for her demon-possessed daughter. Initially, Jesus responds by stating, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.” This statement seems harsh, but it reflects the cultural context of the time, where Jews often viewed Gentiles as outsiders. The “children” represent the people of Israel, while the “dogs” symbolize those outside the covenant community.
The woman, undeterred by this apparent slight, cleverly replies, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.” Her response highlights her faith and determination, indicating that even those considered outsiders can receive mercy. This dialogue reveals the tension between exclusivity and inclusivity in Jesus’ ministry. By engaging with this woman, Jesus demonstrates that His grace extends beyond ethnic and cultural boundaries.
Ultimately, Jesus acknowledges her great faith and grants her request, healing her daughter. This encounter signifies a shift towards a more inclusive understanding of God’s love, emphasizing that faith—rather than cultural identity—is what brings one into communion with God. It encourages readers to reflect on their understanding of mercy and the universal nature of Christ’s message, highlighting that no one is beyond the reach of divine grace. Amen.

For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever.

Even The Dogs Eat The Scraps
In the land where shadows softly lay,
A woman came, her heart in dismay.
A Canaanite, with hope in her gaze,
Cried to Jesus, seeking brighter days.
“Have mercy, Lord,” her voice did plead,
“My daughter’s plight is a desperate need.
She’s tormented, lost in darkness amiss,
But I know Your power can bring her bliss.”
Yet silence hung in the air, profound,
The Savior paused, not a whisper found.
His disciples urged, “Send her away,”
But still she persisted—her faith on display.
With courage bold, she pressed ever near,
“Even the crumbs, Lord, I crave without fear.
For even the dogs eat what’s thrown from the feast,
In my deepest need, Your kindness released.”
“Great is your faith!” He finally spoke,
Like a kindling flame, the stillness awoke.
“Your daughter is healed, go with peace in your heart!”
In that moment of grace, her sorrow did part.
Oh, faith like a fire, unyielding and bright,
In the face of rejection, she clung to the light.
A lesson in love, in humility shown,
That all can be gathered, no one left alone.
For even in silence, His heart hears the cry,
The mercy of heavens always draws from on high.
In every tough journey, when hope seems to fade,
Remember the Canaanite and the grace she displayed. Amen.
