The Gospel of Luke Chapter 11 Verse 29 thru 32
29 While still more people gathered in the crowd, he said to them, “This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it, except the sign of Jonah. 30 Just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation. 31 At the judgment the queen of the south will rise with the men of this generation and she will condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and there is something greater than Solomon here.32 At the judgment the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation and condemn it, because at the preaching of Jonah they repented, and there is something greater than Jonah here.”
In Luke 11:29-32, Jesus addresses a generation that demands miraculous signs to validate His authority and teachings. He responds by referring to Jonah and the Queen of Sheba, underscoring that the ultimate sign is Himself, the Messiah, who embodies God's purpose and presence.
Verse 29 begins with Jesus noting, “This is a wicked generation; it asks for a sign.” Here, He critiques those who fail to recognize the miracles already present in His works and teachings. The idea of "a wicked generation" suggests a spiritual blindness, where familiarity breeds contempt, and the people fail to perceive the divine in their midst. Jesus implies that the miracles He performs should be enough to instill faith.
In verse 30, Jesus contrasts His ministry with that of Jonah, who was sent to the Ninevites. Just as Jonah spent three days in the belly of the great fish, Christ will be in the heart of the earth for three days following His crucifixion. This foreshadowing speaks to the significance of His death and resurrection, presenting a profound sign that surpasses Jonah’s prophetic journey.
Further, in verses 31-32, Jesus mentions the Queen of Sheba, who traveled great distances to seek the wisdom of Solomon. His point is that the people of His time are missing a far greater wisdom, standing before them in the person of Christ. The comparison implies a reversal of expectations; those who are expected to understand the significance of Jesus fail to see Him, while sinners and outsiders (like the Ninevites and the Queen) recognize His worth.
Ultimately, these verses convey a call to discernment and repentance, urging listeners to heed the wisdom of God made manifest in Jesus. Amen.
Join me as we pray our daily prayer of forgiveness. The Lord’s Prayer.
At the Savior's command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to pray:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil, graciously grant peace in our days, that, by the help of your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever.
I am sorry Lord. I believe You died and rose for me. Please forgive me as I forgive others. I share You as my Lord and Savior seeking to live your Will in all things. Prayers for wife Toni and my mother Betty pray for our children especially our two oldest Alexandra & Allen Son in Law Mark Stern; Julian, Gabriel and Jeffrey and our grandchildren Oliver, Julian and Elliott. We pray for those we’ve said we’d pray for and those who’ve asked us to pray for them. We pray for the dying as we do each day Lord give them peace in their last breath. We pray for Holy Mother Church. Our prayers for our niece Brittany. In Jesus Precious Blood by His Name we pray. Amen.

**Something Greater Than Jonah Here**
In the crowd, they sought a sign,
A miracle, a light to shine,
“Show us proof,” the voices cried,
Yet wisdom speaks from deep inside.
“An evil generation seeks to know,
A wondrous sign, a dazzling show.
But Jonah’s tale, a prophet’s call,
Is sign enough for one and all.”
Out from the depths, the fish did bring,
A messenger to tell of things,
Three days within the ocean's clasp,
A lesson held for those who grasp.
The Queen of Sheba traveled far,
To seek the wisdom of a star,
Yet here stands One, far greater still,
With words of truth and sovereign will.
The men of Nineveh shall arise,
With heavy hearts and open eyes,
For they repented at the sound,
While here, the stubborn hearts abound.
So hear the call, the lesson learned,
In faith, let hearts and minds be turned.
For signs may fade, with haste they flee,
But in a humble heart, truth breathes free. Amen.
