The Gospel of Luke Chapter 9 v- 51 thru 55

51 When the days for his being taken up were fulfilled, he resolutely determined to journey to Jerusalem, 52 and he sent messengers ahead of him. On the way they entered a Samaritan village to prepare for his reception there, 53 but they would not welcome him because the destination of his journey was Jerusalem. 54 When the disciples James and John saw this they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to consume them?” 55 Jesus turned and rebuked them, 56 and they journeyed to another village.

In Luke 9:51-55, we see a pivotal moment in Jesus' ministry as He resolutely sets His face toward Jerusalem while knowing that His crucifixion is imminent. During this journey, Jesus and His disciples encounter a Samaritan village that refuses to welcome Him. In response, the disciples, James and John, are infuriated and suggest calling down fire from heaven to consume the village. Jesus rebukes them, saying, “You do not know what manner of spirit you are of; for the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives but to save them.”

This rebuke is significant for several reasons. First, it highlights the disciples' misunderstanding of Jesus' mission. They were still grappling with the notion of a Messiah who would save and redeem rather than condemn. Their reaction mirrors a common human inclination to respond to rejection or hostility with aggression, rather than understanding or compassion. Jesus’ response not only corrects their violent impulse but also redirects their focus toward His overarching mission of love and Salvation.

Parallel to this, Jesus continues to rebuke us today when we stray from His truth. Just as He corrected the disciples, He calls us back when we harbor resentment, anger, or a desire for retribution. In our modern context, we might be tempted to respond to personal grievances or societal issues with hostility rather than grace. Jesus invites us to embody His spirit of love and forgiveness, reminding us that our mission as His followers is to extend grace, not judgment.

In both instances, Jesus emphasizes that true discipleship involves a profound understanding of His heart for humanity. His rebuke serves as a loving reminder that we are called to reflect His character, prioritizing compassion over conflict in our interactions with others. Amen.

Join me as we pray our daily prayer of forgiveness. The Lord’s Prayer.

At the Savior's command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to say:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil, graciously grant peace in our days, that, by the help of your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

I am sorry Lord. I believe You died and rose for me. Please forgive me as I forgive others. I share You as my Lord and Savior seeking to live your Will in all things. Prayers for wife Toni and my mother Betty pray for our children especially our two oldest Alexandra & Allen Son in Law Mark Stern; Julian, Gabriel and Jeffrey and our grandchildren Oliver, Julian and Elliott. We pray for those we’ve said we’d pray for and those who’ve asked us to pray for them. We pray for the dying as we do each day Lord give them peace in their last breath. We pray for Holy Mother Church. Our prayers for our niece Brittany. In Jesus Precious Blood by His Name we pray. Amen.

Ephesians 6:17-20

10-01-2024 Luke 9 V-5155

**Jesus Rebuked Them**

With steadfast heart, He set His gaze,

Toward the city where shadows lay,

A journey marked by love's embrace,

For every soul, He’d pave the way.

The village turned, their doors were shut,

The Samaritans, in scorn, they’d fuss,

But two disciples with hearts aflame,

Desired retribution but were put to shame.

“Lord, shall we call down fire from on high?

Consume this place that spurns Your grace?”

In righteous anger, they sought to fly,

Yet missed the heart of His embrace.

“Know not the spirit that you bear,

For I have come to save, not smite.

In love’s vast reach, there’s hope to share,

A call to mercy, shining bright.”

Oh, how we too, in hurt and pride,

Can stray from paths of light and peace,

Yet Jesus’ voice, a gentle guide,

Calls us to love, our fears release.

So let us walk with hearts anew,

On roads where grace and kindness flow,

For in each soul, a spark holds true,

A chance for healing, love to sow. Amen.
