The Gospel of Matthew 8 Verses 5 thru 13
5 When he entered Capernaum, a centurion approached him and appealed to him, 6 saying, “Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, suffering dreadfully.” 7 He said to him, “I will come and cure him.” 8 The centurion said in reply, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you enter under my roof; only say the word and my servant will be healed. 9 For I too am a person subject to authority, with soldiers subject to me. And I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come here,’ and he comes; and to my slave, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” 10 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, “Amen, I say to you, in no one in Israel have I found such faith. 11 I say to you, many will come from the east and the west, and will recline with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob at the banquet in the kingdom of heaven, 12 but the children of the kingdom will be driven out into the outer darkness, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.” 13 And Jesus said to the centurion, “You may go; as you have believed, let it be done for you.” And at that very hour [his] servant was healed.
Matthew 8:5-13 recounts a profound encounter between Jesus and a Roman centurion, illustrating themes of faith, authority, and the recognition of unworthiness. In this passage, the centurion appeals to Jesus to heal his servant, expressing an extraordinary faith in Christ's power even from a distance. When Jesus offers to come to his home, the centurion humbly declines, stating, "Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof," yet affirming his belief that a mere word from Jesus would suffice for healing. This exchange highlights that true faith transcends mere proximity to Christ; it acknowledges divine authority and grace.
Within the Catholic tradition, we have deeply integrated this scriptural moment into the Holy Mass, particularly with the "Lord, I am not worthy" prayer recited before Communion. This poignant acknowledgment of our unworthiness reflects the centurion’s humility. Just as he humbly recognized his limitations and grasped the breadth of Jesus' authority, we, too, stand before the Lord in our brokenness, realizing that we are not worthy to receive Him. Yet, our faith urges us to approach the altar, trusting in His mercy and love.
As Catholics, this moment during the Mass not only serves as a reminder of our need for God's grace but also as an invitation to open our hearts to His presence. We believe that despite our unworthiness, Jesus longs to dwell "under our roof"—in our hearts and lives. Receiving Him in the Eucharist is the culmination of this faith, a sacred communion where heaven meets earth. It is in this sacrament that we experience Christ's healing and transformative touch, nurturing our souls with His love and grace. Amen.
Join me as we pray our daily prayer of forgiveness. The Lord’s Prayer.
At the Savior's command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to pray:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil, graciously grant peace in our days, that, by the help of your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever.
I am sorry Lord. I believe You died and rose for me. Please forgive me as I forgive others. I share You as my Lord and Savior seeking to live your Will in all things. Prayers for wife Toni and my mother Betty pray for our children especially our two oldest Alexandra & Allen Son in Law Mark Stern; Julian, Gabriel and Jeffrey and our grandchildren Oliver, Julian and Elliott. We pray for those we’ve said we’d pray for and those who’ve asked us to pray for them. We pray for the dying as we do each day Lord give them peace in their last breath. We pray for Holy Mother Church. Our prayers for our niece Brittany. In Jesus Precious Blood by His Name we pray. Amen.

06-28-25 Matthew 8 v0513
**Not Worthy to Have You Enter Under My Roof**
In Capernaum where shadows play,
A centurion sought the light of day,
His servant lay, afflicted and cold,
A plea for mercy, a heart that was bold.
“Lord, come to my house,” he humbly implored,
But Jesus, the healer, had something more in-store.
With awe in his voice, the soldier confessed,
“I am not worthy, yet I seek Your rest.”
“Speak but the word, and my servant shall heal,
For I know authority; Your power is real.”
In awe of his faith, Jesus turned, full of grace,
“I have not seen such in all of this place.”
The crowd gathered 'round, their hearts beating fast,
As He spoke of a future, a kingdom to last.
“Many will come from the east and the west,
To sit at the table, in love they'll be blessed.”
Oh, how we echo that centurion's plea,
In the humble admission, we find our decree.
“Lord, I am not worthy to welcome You in,
Yet here at this altar, Your love I will win.”
So we lift up our hearts, in faith we arise,
United in communion, where mercy defies.
With Jesus our Savior, our spirits made whole,
In Him, we find shelter, the cure for the soul. Amen.
