The Gospel of Matthew 7 Verses 21 thru 29
21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven. 22 Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name? Did we not drive out demons in your name? Did we not do mighty deeds in your name?’23 Then I will declare to them solemnly, ‘I never knew you. Depart from me, you evildoers.’ 24 “Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. 25 The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house. But it did not collapse; it had been set solidly on rock. 26 And everyone who listens to these words of mine but does not act on them will be like a fool who built his house on sand. 27 The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house. And it collapsed and was completely ruined.” 28 When Jesus finished these words, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, 29 for he taught them as one having authority, and not as their scribes.
Matthew 7:21-29 is a profound passage that captures the essence of Jesus' teachings on authenticity in faith and the consequences of actions. In this segment of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus emphasizes that mere verbal affirmations of faith are insufficient for true discipleship. The heart of His message is found in verse 21, where He declares, “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven.”
This statement serves as a stark reminder that genuine faith must be manifested through actions. Jesus distinguishes between those who merely profess faith and those who actively live it out. He warns against the illusion of religious performance, illustrated in verses 22-23: “Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name…?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Depart from me, you evildoers!’” Here, the term "evildoers" is striking. It implies that these individuals, despite their outward expressions of faith and deeds, were actually living in opposition to God’s will.
The phrase “Depart from me” emphasizes the judgment that comes from failure to embody the principles of God's kingdom. Jesus indicates that a relationship with Him is rooted in genuine knowledge and obedience; it is not merely a transactional arrangement based on rituals or public accolades. This call for a relationship underlines the importance of knowing God personally and allowing that relationship to shape one’s life and actions.
Furthermore, in verses 24-27, Jesus offers the metaphor of the wise and foolish builders, reinforcing the idea that the foundation of one’s faith must be solid and rooted in obedience to His teachings. The wise builder, who hears and obeys Jesus' words, withstands storms, while the foolish builder, who hears but does not act, faces destruction. This analogy accentuates the necessity of not only hearing Jesus’ teachings but also implementing them in real life. My wife and I call this living for God First.
In conclusion, Jesus' admonition to those who were cast away as evildoers is a clarion call to authenticity in faith—a faith that goes beyond mere words to active obedience in the will of God. It challenges believers to critically examine their lives, ensuring that their faith manifests in obedience and true righteousness. This passage implores all who follow Christ to develop a genuine relationship with Him, marked by a consistent alignment of words, deeds, and the will of the Father. Amen.
Join me as we pray our daily prayer of forgiveness. The Lord’s Prayer.
At the Savior's command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to pray:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil, graciously grant peace in our days, that, by the help of your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever.
I am sorry Lord. I believe You died and rose for me. Please forgive me as I forgive others. I share You as my Lord and Savior seeking to live your Will in all things. Prayers for wife Toni and my mother Betty pray for our children especially our two oldest Alexandra & Allen Son in Law Mark Stern; Julian, Gabriel and Jeffrey and our grandchildren Oliver, Julian and Elliott. 06-26-25 Matthew 7 v2129
**He Taught Them as One Having Authority**
In a crowd that gathered, voices raised high,
"Lord, Lord," they called, with a fervent cry.
Yet the truth rang clear, a warning profound,
Not all who claim faith in His name are found.
For words without action are hollow, they fail,
As seekers of heaven are warned to prevail.
“Depart from me, workers of ill,” He speaks,
To those who wear masks, yet their hearts are weak.
Build not on the surface, for storms will arise,
The prudent hear His teachings, their foundation is wise.
A life built on granite, obedience their stone,
Will stand through the tempest, secure and alone.
But the fool stands unsteady, his faith built on sand,
In the face of life’s trials, he’ll falter not stand.
For actions declare what mere words cannot prove,
The heart’s true devotion is shown in the move.
So heed now His message, let truth be your guide,
In the shadow of Christ, let your spirit abide.
For not just in speaking, but acting with love,
Will lead us to voice, “O Lord, You’re enough.” Amen.
